Targeting Revisits Map: Ground Beetles
This Targeting Revisits Map shows the 1km squares from which one or more Ground Beetle (Carabid) species have been recorded through the Ground Beetle Recording Scheme.
The colour of each square shows the status of each 1km square based on exisiting and new records (records made or submitted in 2023).

Please note the map may take a while to load or update
- Bright pink squares are ‘Targets for revisits’: They have records from only one year in the past – if these sites are revisited then they can be included in our trend analysis.
- Pale pink squares are 'New this year': They, for the first time, have records this year. Next year these will become targets for revisits.
- Dark green squares are ‘Well recorded’: They already have records from multiple years – these sites are already included in our trend analysis, but records from these sites continue to be valuable.
- Pale green squares are ‘Successful revisits’: They previously only had records from a single year, or no records, but now have records from multiple years and will be included in our trend analysis. The records added this year can include unreported sightings from previous years as well as new sightings from the current year.
- Blank squares are 'Unrecorded': So far, don’t have any records of Ground Beetles in the recording scheme database or iRecord.

Researchers at the Biological Records Centre at UKCEH use data from 'well recorded' squares (dark green on the map: with visits in multiple years) to estimate species trends. You can increase the amount of data for this analysis by revisiting squares that have records from only one year in the past – and so to turn the bright pink 'targets for revisit' to dark green, 'well recorded' squares. Clicking on a square will show a pop-up containing summary statistics for the 1km square.
This Targeting Revisits Map is updated continuously with records submitted to iRecord. Records submitted to the recording scheme via other routes will appear on the Targeting Revisits Map in due course.
All records are valuable, but when recording it is especially valuable to record all the species that you observe during a visit.
